Since the beginning of October, a variety of Rocomamas branches have played host to FIFA 20 tournaments. Ten Gauteng qualifiers, six Cape Town qualifiers and one Gauteng regional playoff. R16,000 in cash and numerous products sponsored by Apex Interactive had been awarded to winners. All this led to Saturday 7 December and the Z-Fest event where the top qualified players faced off for an additional R12,000 cash prize pool.

Both the last chance qualifiers and finals of the Rocomamas Smashball Series were hosted at the event in Brackenfell, with the four qualified Gauteng players flown in by Rocomamas for the event. However, in the week leading up to the finals, three of the four qualified Gauteng players withdrew due to a variety of reasons. Only Orlando Pirates Esports player Pirates UnFaizdd landed in Cape Town to compete.

Between him and the championship crown were ten Cape Town players. Six had qualified via the branches and four secured spots in the last chance qualifiers.

GROUPS

The 11 players were split across two groups. Playing each player in the group once, the first target was to secure a top two spot in the group. Of course, loadshedding has become the festive season's spoiler and only one group game could be played before a break was taken.

On their return, a number of players began to stamp their authority on the competition. Bravado Gaming's Masoom Fakie went undefeated in the group phase. After his recent win in the Sandton City Gamers Expo tournament, that sort of form made him a favorite. He was joined from the group by Pirates' player Ryan Bastos, while the other two players progressing through to the playoffs were Gauteng qualifier Muhammad Fa'iz Mahomed and Goliath Gaming's Julio 'The Beast' Bianchi.

PLAYOFFS

The playoffs saw the two Pirates players facing off due to their placement in each group. The match up went the way of Fa'iz 3-2. The other semifinal saw the first and second placed players from Sandton facing off again. However, this time 'The Beast' secured a 3-0 victory over Masoom to find himself in another FIFA 20 final.

As an expectant crowd watched, 'The Beast' lived up to his name with a comprehensive 6-0 win to take his total two-week winnings to R16,000, and secure the Rocomamas Smashball Series 2019 title.
